We were not pioneers ourselves, but journeyed over old trails that were new to us, and with hearts open. Who shall distinguish?

J. Monroe Thorington

Starting on June 15, 2007, we’re taking a sabattical (or as I like to call it “Temporary Early Retirement”) to travel Canada and the world.

Our trip will begin with a six week trip on Canada’s remote Elk and Thelon Rivers, two pristine subarctic waterways flowing across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut to Baker Lake near Hudson’s Bay. From there, it’s off to the Canadian Rockies, where we’ll be hiking some of the finest trails on the Continental Divide (and maybe catching a few trout on the way). After all that time in the mountains, we’ll need some by the sea. So we’ll head to the Far East of the Western World – Newfoundland – for a month of hiking on the ruggedly beautiful East Coast Trail and a huge bash in the form of our sister’s wedding.  Before we’re done with Our Home and Native Land we’ll have criss-crossed the country from B.C. to NF; from Tundra to Mountains to Coastline. We’ll either be in peak physical condition or a complete wreck.

After the wedding, we take the adventure international – from Africa (Egypt, Madagascar, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya) to the Middle East (Jordan and Israel) to South East Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam)  to the Subcontinent (India and Nepal), to China and Mongolia. We’ve got big plans and, hopefully, enough money to realize them. Regardless, the plan is pretty nice, and goes good with a bottle of wine and an atlas.

In the meantime, we’re also happy to share with you some stories of our past wilderness trips in Canada.

We’d love to hear your stories, suggestions and comments on our adventures and we hope you’ll enjoy keeping in touch with us.
